'You'd be hard put to find a more attractive building to hone your craft in'
Fourth Monkey in Ink PelletWe were delighted to welcome journalist Susan Elkin for a behind the scenes visit of our new Bristol Centre of Excellence, The Bamboo House, which was featured in the March 2022 issue of Ink Pellet, the arts magazine for teachers.
Hosted by our Head of Centre of Excellence & MA Collaborative Theatre Course Leader (London and Bristol), Paloma Oakenfold, Susan had an opportunity to explore the studios and spaces that make up our Bristol training centre in the city’s picturesque Portland Square, as well as chat with a selection of our CertHE Acting & Theatre Making students about what drew them to training with Fourth Monkey.
Of the Grade II-listed building that we have made our home in the city, Susan said: “you’d be hard put to find a more attractive building to hone your craft in and, of course, there are some fine inspirational quotes on the walls – a Fourth Monkey trademark.”
Part of our ongoing commitment to making drama school training truly accessible and inclusive, by decentralising Fourth Monkey’s professional accredited actor training and taking it from London to a regional location to reach a broader spectrum of aspiring actors, artists, movers and makers, we were thrilled to give Susan a chance to catch some of our Bristol student community in action as they dived into text and monologue-based classes.
Speaking about what appealed to them about taking the first steps in their actor training journey with Fourth Monkey, CertHE Acting & Theatre Making student Ellis said:
“I was deemed too young for drama school, but the Fourth Monkey audition was the most challenging and the most fun, so here I am!”
