Clowning for All
Created and taught by Rhum + Clay, THE CLOWN is an exciting and unique creative programme designed to explore the world of clowning in a real-world industry-reflective course.
You must be prepared to be open, to display and explore:
PLAYFULNESS | A sense of play is absolutely key to exploring and unlocking the clown state. Much of the course will be based around improvisation, and creating from a moment of play.
COMMITMENT | The only way we will develop as a performer and as an ensemble of participants is if we have full commitment from everyone. Commitment to engage, take risks, attend all classes and support each other along the journey.
CURIOSITY | The more curious you are the more interesting the work will be. We will be delving into new unexplored territory and want people who are as excited by the unknown as we are.
FAILURE | Clowning is about failure, pure and simple. Most of the time it doesn’t work, sometimes it does. We need people to embrace that failure. The training and exercises will be rigorous. We will be honest with each other about what works and what doesn’t.
A strong focus of this course if the development of new Clowns, alongside the progression of each person’s individual journey. Participants will begin with learning the clown ‘state’; through training, playing, games and exercises. During this period of exploration participants will be encouraged to discover and develop their own clown. The course culminates in a period of creation in which the group will devise pieces of clown theatre, to be presented to invited guests through a scratch night and final show.
Join a community of like-minded people, from a diverse range of backgrounds who are also looking to enhance their skills repertoire.
Clowning encapsulates life’s absurdities, contradictions, hilarity and tragedies all in one. We will use the spirit and dynamism of the clown to speak, laugh and respond to the times in which we live.
